Project details

What we need
  • A comprehensive donor relations strategy document with recommendations on tactics to engage donors and guidelines for measuring the success of relations efforts (i.e. retention and attrition rates)
  • Training on key aspects of donor relations strategy including donor communication, acknowledgement, appreciation and gift stewardship
  • Guidance on developing and enhancing the strategy as the organization expands
What we have in place
  • We've recently spent a lot of time analyzing our donor database to determine where the bulk of our donors live, who our major donors are, when they are most likely to donate, etc. We have a system for donor acknowledgement in place and have implemented strategies to increase donor retention, but we need help measuring if these strategies are working, and if not, determine other ways to effectively reach our donors.
How this will help
This project will save us $6,750 , allowing us to provide an estimated 300 young adult survivors with free online education related to the cost of cancer.

The SAMFund recognizes how critical a strategic, well-executed donor relations plan is to the success of our organization. We recently hired a full-time development professional to focus specifically on donor recruitment and retention, and now that we have the capacity to execute a donor relations plan, we are looking for the expertise necessary to be successful.

Our mission

The Samfund is designed to help young adults recover from the financial impact of cancer treatment.

What we do

The Samfund currently provides three programs to help young adults get back on their feet after treatment:

1. Direct financial assistance: since 2005, close to $1.5 million in grants has been awarded to young adults across the country, covering a wide range of needs including living expenses, medical expenses, mental and physical health and wellness, family-building, and many more.

2. Online support: The Samfund hosts a free Webinar series called "Moving Forward With Your Financial Health," designed to provide concrete and reliable information and resources surrounding a range of practical and financial issues, including employment, insurance, medical debt and more. Webinar presentations are made by financial professionals as well as representatives from other cancer organizations.

3. Finances 101: A toolkit for young adults with cancer: Launched at the end of 2014, this new program is designed to help young adults make better-informed financial decisions during and after cancer treatment so that their financial recovery doesn't become a lifelong struggle. The toolkit is currently comprised of blog posts and Webinars on selected topics, and we are currently in the process of designing an interactive decision-making tool that will be housed on our website.

Through these programs, The Samfund helps young adults get back on their feet so that they can move forward towards their goals.
